South Dakota nursing CE requirements

For registered nurse license renewal, read off ARSD 20:48:03:09 to :17 rather than an aggregator. Checked 2026-10-15.

No general hour requirement

This board sets no blanket number of continuing education hours. That is not the same as nothing to do: anything listed below is still mandatory, and the board can still ask you to show competence another way.

Ways to satisfy South Dakota

  • 140 employment hours in any 12 month period over the preceding 6 years

    140 practice hours

    Required for active status.

  • Reentry: 480 employment hours over the preceding 6 years

    480 practice hours
  • Reentry: a board-approved refresher course

Minimum 160 course hours: 80 theory and 80 supervised clinical.

Do BLS and ACLS cards count?

The board does not say

One contact hour is

50 minutes

  • No blanket hour requirement here, which is not the same as no requirement. Anything listed above is still mandatory.

No CE hours at all. Active status is tied to employment hours instead. Biennial on the licensee birth date; an initial license expires on the birth date in the second calendar year after issuance.

Get warned before your South Dakota licence renews

Tell us the date on your licence and we will email you 60 days before it lapses. Once, per cycle. No account, no password, nothing else sent to you.

Hold a licence in more than one state?

The compliance map takes the CE you have already done and shows you where it would hold up across all 51 jurisdictions at once, including the ones that do not work the way anybody assumes. Three questions, no account. Both tools are available in English, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese.
